Carl is a lawyer specialising in both contentious and non-contentious matters. Carl has extensive experience in structuring, drafting and negotiating procurement documentation, building contracts, professional appointments, development agreements and security documentation for employers, developers, contractors, occupiers, investors and financial institutions.
Carl was the lead construction lawyer during the planning, procurement and construction of One Hyde Park for Candy & Candy, which effectively set the market for what is expected from construction documentation in the super prime residential market. Carl remains very active in this market.
Carl also has extensive experience of acting on large infrastructure projects, including road, rail and power, as well as acting for mainstream commercial developers and office occupiers. Carl has also acted for banks and financial institutions, both in terms of advising them in relation to toxic assets and their disposal but also on those development projects which are still attracting debt finance.
Carl also regularly advised developers who are entering the care home and assisted living sectors and again is using his experience of super prime residential to assist these client in developing top of market assisted living developments.
Carl’s contentious experience includes acting for clients on all aspects of adjudication and court proceedings both in pursing his clients claims and defending them, as the need arises.
In addition, Carl’s clients have been extremely active amongst London’s super prime residential market where Carl has advised owners, developers and banks on the particular issues that surround developing for the super prime residential market. He is currently advising a client on the refurbishment of two adjoining town houses that he owns in London’s very exclusive Eaton Square. Carl has been ranked in Chambers and Partners for construction for many years.

Carl remains very active in this market having set the standard advising Candy and Candy on all development aspects of One Hyde Park, the ‘World’s Most Expensive Apartment’. He has recently completed the development of a new build 42,000 sq/ft house on the Bishops Avenue in north London and has two adjoining townhouses in Eaton Square currently being extended and renovated.

Carl’s client are very active in this market where two new top of market homes have recently been completed and opened and another three are under construction.

Carl was responsible for all of the construction elements of the Savoy refurbishment a number of years ago and has gone on to refurbish other 5* hotels including The Churchill Hotel and The Westbury Hotel. He was also responsible for the construction of the University Arms hotel in Cambridge and successfully defending a £14m claim by the contractor of that project.

Carl has advised a number of clients in relation to defective cladding claims following the Grenfell tragedy. This has included advising a Housing Association on the non-compliant cladding and inappropriate fire stopping that was discovered in one of their buildings that they had purchased. This involved negotiating remedial works from the contractor that originally constructed the property and a financial contribution from the local authority from whom the client had purchased the property. Carl is also currently advising a client who is seeking remedial works to their residential apartment block pursuant to funding from the Building Safety Fund, which is shortly to start on site.
